Experts from Sweden, studied nearly 40 medical databases, concluded that patients with Huntington's disease, which leads to atrophy of the cerebral cortex, approximately 50% reduced risk of cancer.
Specialists from the University of Lund, Sweden checking hospital records between 1969 and 2008 found that 1,510 had Huntington's disease. During the period of the study, 91 patients developed cancer. The authors note that these figures were 53% lower than expected for the population as a whole.
We found that the incidence of cancer was significantly lower in patients with polyglutamine diseases than the general population. The mechanisms underlying the protective effect against cancer is still unclear and more research is needed, "- commented the authors of the work.
According to them, Huntington's disease belongs to the so-called polyglutamine diseases. Among people with such diseases as observed in the low probability of occurrence of tumors.
